Talk Title

K-12 Data Science and Statistics Education: the View from California

Abstract

For decades now, statistics educators have worked to achieve wide-spread statistical literacy. And now, well before the task is accomplished, along comes Data Science Education. I’ll explain why, from my perspective, this term is more than just a new label for an old thing, describe updates to the American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Pre-K-12 report, and give a brief overview of a high school data science course that I helped design and propagate. I’ll also discuss currents in California pushing back against data science (and statistics) education.

Speaker Profile

I received a PhD from UC San Diego in 1994. Before that, I received a B.S. from Harvey Mudd College in 1987. I have been employed at UCLA since 1994 and have served as the vice-chair of undergraduate studies for the department of Statistics (now Statistics and Data Science) since its founding in 1998. I have the co-author and faculty advisor for the Introduction to Data Science Project and co-author of an introductory statistics book published by Pearson. I currently serve on the ASA/NCTM joint committee and am the founding editor of the peer-reviewed journal Technology Innovations in Statistics Education, and am founder of the ASA DataFest competition.
