  Science and Statistics Education: the View from California AbstractFor de
 cades now, statistics educators have worked to achieve wide-spread statis
 tical literacy. And now, well before the task is accomplished, along com
 es Data Science Education. I’ll explain why, from my perspective, this t
 erm is more than just a new label for an old thing, describe updates to t
 he American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instru
 ction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Pre-K-12 report, and give a brief o
 verview of a high school data science course that I helped design and prop
 agate. I’ll also discuss currents in California pushing back against data 
 science (and statistics) education. Speaker ProfileI received a PhD from U
 C San Diego in 1994. Before that, I received a B.S. from Harvey Mudd Coll
 ege in 1987. I have been employed at UCLA since 1994 and have served as th
 e vice-chair of undergraduate studies for the department of Statistics (no
 w Statistics and Data Science) since its founding in 1998. I have the co-a
 uthor and faculty advisor for the Introduction to Data Science Project and
  co-author of an introductory statistics book published by Pearson. I curr
 ently serve on the ASA/NCTM joint committee and am the founding editor of 
 the peer-reviewed journal Technology I\novations in Statistics Education,
  and am founder of the ASA DataFest competition. \n\nContact Information:
