The 6th annual CAS & U of T Case Competition wrapped up on Friday, March 6, 2026, bringing together students, judges, and industry partners for a real-world challenge in property and casualty insurance. Students act as actuaries at a regional insurer seeking to expand its dormitory renters’ insurance business. Using a dataset of 10,000 policyholders that includes claims history, underwriting tiers, and demographic and housing characteristics, teams develop a predictive pricing model that segments risk and determines actuarially sound premiums for individual policyholders. In addition to technical modelling, students were asked to interpret their results from a business perspective, considering issues such as underwriting guidelines, expense structures, and strategic recommendations for the company’s future growth.
This year, 42 student teams registered, and 27 teams submitted final entries. Student teams had three weeks from January to February to tackle the case and upload a five-minute video presentation, building both technical skills and the ability to explain ideas clearly and confidently.
