Qiang Sun
I am an associate professor of Statistical Sciences, Computer Science, and Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Toronto (UofT) and a visiting professor at MBZUAI, where I lead the NeXAIS (AGI × Stats) group. My long-term goal is to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is efficient, trustworthy, personalized, and accessible to all. My current research focuses on trustworthy ML, efficient GenAI, and foundations of AGI, driven by real-world challenges in technology, finance, and science; See here for slightly more details. We actively collaborate with industry partners, so feel free to reach out. We welcome any requests for high-level insight, in-depth feedback, collaboration, and invited talks.
Prior to my tenure at UofT, I was an associate research scholar at Princeton University. I earned my PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and my BS in SCGY from the University of Science and Technology of China. I am also honoured to be recognized as a distinguished alumnus of UNC-Chapel Hill.
In addition to my faculty role, I serve as an associate editor for the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR), the Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA), the Electronic Journal of Statistics (EJS), and Data Science in Science (DSiS). I also serve as an area chair for several major ML conferences, including ICLR, COLT, AISTATS, and UAI. Beyond these roles, I am a member of the executive committee of the BAAI Young Scientist Club and regularly deliver plenary talks across a range of venues.
I dedicate part of my time to academic philanthropy and the promotion of
statistical AI. Fundamentally, I champion problem- and data-centric
approaches in statistics and AI, aiming to drive meaningful progress that
benefits society and advances human well-being.
