May 14, 2024 by Kal Romain

The Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) has recognized twenty-six scholars globally with the Hannan Graduate Student Travel Award for 2024, including two from the University of Toronto’s Department of Statistical Sciences: Hengchao Chen and Junhao Zhu.

Hengchao Chen, a PhD student, brings a robust background in mathematics from the University of Science and Technology of China. His research interests are broad, covering various aspects of machine learning and data science, such as geometric data analysis and differential privacy.

Junhao Zhuu began his academic career at Sun Yat-Sen University in China and is currently focused on biostatistics, data science, and theoretical statistics. Supervised by Professor Dehan Kong and Professor Zhaolei Zhang, he delves into areas like statistical inference for non-Euclidean data and optimal transport analysis for sc-RNA sequencing.

Established to support the growth and development of future statisticians and mathematicians, the Hannan Graduate Student Travel Award is open to all IMS student members globally. For further details about the Hannan Graduate Student Travel Award, the application process, and other IMS recognitions, please visit IMS awards page.
