Associate Professor Stanislav Volgushev has been awarded the 2026 CRM-SSC Prize, a national honour recognizing outstanding research in statistics.
Presented annually by the Centre de recherches mathématiques and the Statistical Society of Canada, the prize recognizes a statistical scientist’s excellence and accomplishments in research during the first fifteen years after earning their doctorate (or equivalent degree). Volgushev was cited for “original and deep contributions to methods and theory for statistical inference with complex data structures, including quantile regression, multivariate dependence and copula processes, resampling methods, and the theory of extreme values.”
Since joining the University of Toronto in 2016, Volgushev has built an internationally recognized research program in theoretical statistics and probability. In addition to his research, he has played an important leadership role in the department and currently serves as Associate Chair, Graduate Studies.
Reflecting on the award, Volgushev emphasized the role of the department community and the students he has worked with at U of T.
“There are two big factors that played a major role in this: a very supportive environment and amazing graduate students with whom I was fortunate to work (and keep working) at this department.”
Volgushev also thanked Prof. Nancy Reid for putting together the nomination materials and Prof. Jeff Rosenthal for spearheading the department’s awards committee.
The honour recognizes not only Volgushev’s research excellence, but also his contributions to the graduate community in Statistical Sciences.
