Sebastian Jaimungal named to 2026 Class of SIAM Fellows

March 31, 2026 by Kal Romain

Professor Sebastian Jaimungal, chair of the University of Toronto’s Department of Statistical Sciences, has been named to the 2026 Class of SIAM Fellows, a major international honour recognizing outstanding contributions to applied mathematics and related fields.

The honour comes from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), which recognizes members for outstanding contributions to research and service. In announcing this year’s fellows, SIAM cited Jaimungal’s contributions to stochastic control, mathematical finance and insurance, as well as his distinguished service to the scientific community.

Jaimungal is one of 25 researchers worldwide named to the 2026 class, and the University of Toronto is the only Canadian institution represented in this year’s cohort. The fellows will be recognized at the 2026 SIAM Annual Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, taking place July 6 to 10, 2026.

The recognition reflects the international reach of Jaimungal’s work and its influence in areas where mathematics connects directly with pressing questions in finance, risk and decision-making. It also marks a significant distinction for the University of Toronto and for the Department of Statistical Sciences.

Join us in congratulating Professor Jaimungal on this well-deserved honour.
