Special Enrolment Courses: STA490Y1, STA492H1 and STA496H1/STA497H1

Several Statistics courses have special enrolment procedures so enrolment in these courses cannot be done on ACORN. Please select the course you are interested in from the list below for information on the enrolment process, prerequisites and instructions on how to request enrolment.

 

Calendar description: Through case studies and collaboration with researchers in other disciplines, students develop skills in the collaborative practice of Statistics. Focus is on pragmatic solutions to practical issues including study design, dealing with common complications in data analysis, and ethical practice, with particular emphasis on written communication.

Prerequisite: STA303H1, STA304H1/STA305H1, STA355H1, and completion of the application form below

Corequisite: one additional 400 level STA course

How do I request enrolment in this course?

You cannot enroll in STA490Y1 on ACORN. You must complete and submit the application form below. STA490Y1 is a project-based course where students work on real projects with collaborators from other disciplines.  So, the course instructors need the information that you provide in this application to inform projects and so they can ensure project groups are balanced, and that your academic preparation aligns with the project needs.

You must complete this application no later than July 29, 2020 to be considered for enrolment in STA490Y1 in 2020-21. Note that this application may take 10-20 minutes to complete. Any student who does not complete and submit this application by this date will *not* be eligible for enrolment in STA490Y1 in 2020-21, even if it is a program requirement.

Am I eligible to take this course?

This is a program requirement course for students enrolled in the Applied Statistics Specialist or the Specialist in Statistical Science: Methods and Practice programs. Students who are on track to complete the Applied Statistics Specialist or the Specialist in Statistical Science: Methods and Practice program, including a Focus, in 2020–21, and who have successfully completed STA303H1, STA304H1/STA305H1, and STA355H1 will be prioritized.

Should space in the course permit, students pursuing a Statistics Major, or another Statistics specialist program offered in the Department of Statistical Sciences (i.e., the Statistics Specialist, the Specialist in Statistical Science: Theory and Methods, or the Data Science Specialist) will be considered for enrolment in STA490Y1. Decisions for students in these Statistics programs of study will be made based on when the application for enrolment in STA490Y1 was received, the 300- and 400- level STA courses taken and marks earned in these courses.

Even if STA490Y1 is a program requirement, you will not be permitted to take STA490Y1 without having completed the course prerequisites (STA303H1, STA304H1/STA305H1, STA355H1) before September 2020.

Calendar description: This course is intended for students completing the Statistical Science: Theory and Methods Specialist program. Novel influential ideas and current research topics in statistics will be explored through readings and discussion. Content will generally vary from semester to semester. Student presentations and written reports will be required.

How do I request enrolment in this course?

Enrolling on ACORN is not sufficient for enrolment. You must also complete and submit the application form below. STA492H1 is a research seminar course where students read, summarize, discuss and present on statistics research papers. The course instructor will use the information you provide in this application to help inform course design and guide the choice of research areas. 

You must complete this application no later than July 29, 2020 to be considered for enrolment in STA492H1 in 2020-21. Note that this application may take 10-15 minutes to complete. Any student who does not complete and submit this application by this date will *not* be eligible for enrolment in STA492H1 in 2020-21, even if it is a program requirement.

Calendar description: Independent study under the direction of a faculty member. Students wishing to take this course must have the permission of the Department of Statistical Sciences and of the prospective supervisor. Not eligible for CR/NCR option.

Prerequisite: At least 1.0 FCE 300+ level STA courses with a minimum grade of 80% in each course.

Exclusion: STA497H1/STA498Y1/STA499Y1

How do I request enrolment in this course?

If you have successfully completed the prerequisites and are interested in taking this course, you will need to find a supervisor who is a faculty member in the Department of Statistical Sciences.

Review our faculty members’ research profiles (please visit our faculty directory) and contact a professor whose research interests align with yours to ask if they would be willing to supervise you in a readings course. When you contact a potential supervisor, it is recommended that you provide information on the courses you’ve taken, and your performance in them, as well as information on your Statistics research interests.

If the potential supervisor agrees to supervise you, download our Independent Reading Course Form, and fill it out in consultation with your supervisor. Once your supervisor signs it, email your completed form to ug.statistics@utstat.utoronto.ca for departmental approval.
